Close Reading
One of the best ways to prepare yourself for the close reading paper is to make sure you are familiar with the conventions of journalistic articles and opinion pieces (this will also help you with your discursive writing). Aim to read an article a day if you can - find a topic you're interested in, and remember to note if there are any interesting word choices, or images, or sentence structures used by the writer as they try to convey their argument or point of view to an audience.

You will have an hour and 45 minutes to complete the close reading paper under exam conditions, in the external assessment. It is marked out of 50, and many of the marks are very easily achieved provided you have familiarised yourself with the formulae for doing so. Practice, practice, practice... and see the skills blog for more hints and tips.
