The Junior Phase - A Broad General Education
Pupils in S1-3 at Kinlochbervie High School follow a skills-based curriculum, to equip them with language and literacy skills they need to gain access to their thinking, their learning, their ability to express and develop their emotions, and their sense of personal identity.
The Literacy and English framework, as outlined in A Curriculum for Excellence, promotes the development of critical and creative thinking as well as competence in listening and talking, reading, writing and the personal, interpersonal and team-working skills which are so important in life and in the world of work.
We aim to provide pupils with a range of learning experiences and opportunities which will contribute to their development of literacy, including critical literacy, creativity, and knowledge and appreciation of literature and culture. We see learning as an active process: for example, making notes, rather than taking notes.
The skills developed in English are divided into four main organisers:
• listening and talking
• reading
• writing.
