The perfect opportunity to crack on with your Power Readers and reading record sheets. They can be found using the following link:
National 5/Higher
- Find and read good quality articles. See the Higher Close Reading page for links to the websites of good quality newspapers and their online Opinion pages (e.g. the Guardian, Telegraph, and Scotsman.
For these articles:
- Who is the audience?
- What is the purpose?
- What are the author's key points? (limit to 3)
- Are there any unfamiliar words? If so - what do they mean?
- Can you summarise each paragraph in a tweet? (40 characters) Can you summarise the whole article in just 10 words?
- What do you notice about sentence structure? word choice? imagery? If you were making up a close reading paper, what questions would you be asking?
- What is the author's tone? How do you know that?
- Read over your notes from the texts that you are preparing from the exam. Make a mind-map for each of the central concerns of the text. Try to include: quotations, key incidents, characterisation, plot and structure, how it is explored through the text as a whole, language, setting, and any other relevant features (genre specific critical terminology e.g for poetry = form, metre; for drama = stage directions)
