Power Readers!
Power Readers is a new programme of reading for pupils in S1-3 at Kinlochbervie High School.
It is designed to encourage pupils to read, and to read widely, at whatever their level of confidence (though with enough of a challenge!)
For every text (book, poem, short story, autobiography) written, a reading response sheet must be filled in before it can be signed off by a teacher in the reading diary.
Pupils move from bronze to silver to gold, gaining house points and glory en route.
Please see the PowerPoint that was used at the assembly launch in January 2014 for more information!

Dear Parents,
Power Readers
Last week, pupils in S1-S3 attended an assembly to launch a new literacy project in the school, called Power Readers, designed to motivate pupils to read more, and more widely.
The programme has three levels: bronze (4 texts), silver (8 texts), and gold (12 texts). At each level, whilst pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves, books (or audio-books) of any difficulty can be read, according to reading confidence. House points and prizes are also linked to the scheme.
Every pupil has also been issued an orange booklet since the start of term, their Bronze ‘reading diary’. This must be completed to gain their bronze certificate, before moving on to Silver.
You will find an outline of Power Readers Bronze on the booklet’s first page. You will see it also requires your child to give a short response to what they have read before their book is signed off. There is a wide element of choice here designed to suit individual preference: for example, writing a letter to the author, designing a book cover, drawing a timeline or cartoon strip of events or map of the setting, writing a review, or giving an oral report.
Whilst some personal reading time will be given in English lessons, pupils are encouraged to use the Power Readers scheme at home to further develop their skills. Response worksheets will be stored in the school library so that pupils can access them in their own time. Your support in this scheme would be much appreciated. The benefits of reading are enormous; not least in improving literacy skills, but also for creativity, new ideas and experiences, and independent thinking.
Please get in touch if you have any further queries.
